Rigidity isn’t mainly a character flaw. It’s largely what stress does to the machinery of flexibility — and that machinery can be trained.
Cognitive agility is the capacity to shift perspective, notice your own judgment, stay curious, and exercise discernment under stress. Beneath it sits cognitive flexibility — one of the three core executive functions, and the one that builds on the others: to change perspective you must inhibit the current one and hold a different one in working memory.1 That is why agility can be trained rather than merely hoped for.
A meta-analysis of acute stress and executive function found that stress specifically impairs working memory and cognitive flexibility — the system locks onto the most salient cue and the most familiar response.2 That is the “there’s only one way to handle this” narrowing.3
The hopeful half: because flexibility runs on trainable resources, it responds to training. Greater mindfulness and meditation experience is associated with better performance on attention and cognitive-flexibility tasks — associated, because those comparisons are cross-sectional.4 Stress narrows the aperture; trained attention helps widen it back.
“Decisive” and “rigid” can look identical from the inside. The skill is knowing which one you’re in.

Catch rigidity in real timeNotice when one interpretation has hardened into the only interpretation: “Am I locked into one read?” Then make room to load a second possibility into working memory before acting.1
Make curiosity a disciplineAsk “what are three other explanations that fit what I’m seeing?” Deliberately considering alternatives measurably reduces one-track, biased judgment.5 Treat the first read as a hypothesis — decentering: stepping back to observe your own experience as experience.6
Discern under pressureSeparate the emotion from the strategy: feel the pull and still choose the response that fits the situation and your training. Reappraising what the arousal means keeps more of the thinking brain online than white-knuckling does.7 Decision-making under acute stress shifts toward habitual, reward-driven choices — so notice the pull, don’t trust it blindly.8
